AUSI encourages our divers at different levels, as well as divemasters and instructors, to do more dives than what is described as a minimum; more dives and exercises increase skill, and provide divers with knowledge.
Also learning CPR-First Aid in the basic course, and repeating this at all course occasions is a good recommendation.
For example, learning to dive in the Caribbean or Australia or generally warm water, is not the same as learning to dive in cold water. It is therefore important to adapt the training and not leave anything to chance. Which diver is helped by having taken a course in the Caribbean when he/she is suddenly faced with a winter dive in cold water, involving knowledge of anti-freeze regulators, dual/independent air systems such as pony bottle and dry suits? Every dive, both at recreational level and during different courses – adapt the course to local conditions.
Therefore, never dive with a diver who does not have Rescue training or equipment knowledge, because then he or she is unlikely to be able to help you in the event of an incident. Ask yourself and your dive buddy: can we both Rescue, do we know what to do in the event of an incident?
Therefore, do not dive outside your knowledge and do not push the limits and dive in environments that you have no experience of. If you dive without knowledge, you risk becoming a danger to both yourself and your diving buddies.
